Second Wind Wins 39th Annual Crocker Race

From the Manchester Cricket

Second Wind, skippered by Tod Sayce, took home the trophy for First Overall in the 39th Annual S.S. Crocker Memorial Race held on Saturday, July 16. The Crocker Race, sponsored jointly by the Manchester Yacht Club and the Manchester Harbor Boat Club, is held annually in memory of internationally-renowned yacht designer Samuel Sturgis Crocker.

The beautiful day brought out 67 boats to race. The boats were divided into 8 handicap classes with staggered start times, beginning at 10:15 and continuing at 15-minute intervals until 12:00 noon. Winners were determined by actual finish time. Due to wind conditions, the usual 17.5-mile triangular windward leeward course was shortened. This year the boats started at Gales Ledge buoy off Manchester and rounded the marks at Newcombs whistle and Eastern Point to finish back at Gales Ledge. Following the race, participants, friends, and family gathered at the Manchester Yacht Club for the chowder, festivities, and for the announcement of the race results.

This year's event was a real Crocker family affair. Two Crocker family members, Kitty and Skip Crocker, came out to race. Their Crocker boat, Five Ply, won both first in the Crocker Design class and third in the 11:30am class. Helping accept their awards were the great, great-grandchildren of Samuel Sturgis, and the after race party chowder was donated by his great grandson, Brendan, owner of the Wild Horse Café. The family and all participants anxiously await next year's 40th Annual Crocker Race. The whole day is an eventful and fun tradition.
