Juniors Win Vaughan Trophy
The annual, hotly contested, team race between the Adults and Juniors was held on Sunday, July 16 in very light and shifty winds. The afternoon began with a very detailed and helpful overview of team racing by MYCs own Casey Thomas, an MSA instructor and former member of the Manchester High Sailing Team. With Frank McNamara as race committee and Casey in a mark boat, seven of MSAs new 420s headed out for an afternoon of racing. The adult team members were Alan and Leigh Scharfe, Sarah Enright and Yvonne van Bodengraven, Emmet Holt and Lisa McNamara, and Jeff and Maddy Bistrong. Alex Arnsten and Kristy Landsvik, Mary Golden and Billy McNamara, and Colin Jermain and Taylor Perkins raced for the Juniors. Due to light winds, we only managed two races using a modified triangle course. During the first race, positions changed constantly, but the Juniors managed to squeak out a win by one point. The wind built for the finish of the first race, only to die again by the starting gun of race two. Still, the six skippers showed great concentration and boat handling in the almost non-existent wind and all six boats racing finished very close together, with the Juniors having the winning combination once again. A third race was started, but abandoned when the wind disappeared for good. Congratulations to the Juniors!
